Feeling as always peaceful after having my weekly confession heard, I recalled something said by St Philip Neri, one of my favourite saints, to the effect that, had he not been commanded* to become a priest, he would have gladly served the Lord as a layman all his days: a very fine thought, repaying careful consideration. It is good to serve the Lord.
(*St Philip's confessor more or less ordered him to take Holy Orders! - something hardly likely to happen these days...)
